Get to Sleep... Naturally
I heard a scary statistic the other day: over 43 million Americans regularly rely on some form of medication to get to sleep. If this is true, that means that around 1/5 of the population is having sleep troubles.
For most people, sleep disruption creates a host of other health problems – lowered energy, irritability, and poor focus among them. No wonder so many people are willing to do whatever they can to get some sleep!
A Natural Approach
If you are experiencing sleep problems, you should know that there are quite a few things that can contribute to this. Stress, poor diet, menopause, andropause, and side effects of prescription drugs, supplements and herbs can all be part of the problem.
In addition, if there are any underlying imbalances in neurotransmitters to begin with, sleep can be a problem. And, after sleep problems occur, there will very likely be further imbalances of these important brain chemicals.
How We Approach Sleep Problems
In our clinic, we do a thorough review of someone's situation if they aren't sleeping well. We want to see which of the many possible factors might be present so we can address any and all of them. The treatments might include acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional therapy or exercise.
In every case, we do a neurotransmitter assessment and recommend specific nutritional supplements to help restore the crucial balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. In plain English, this means that whatever is out of balance in brain chemistry, we bring back to balance.
Effects are generally noticeable within a few weeks and then we retest to determine if we've reached the goal or not. When we have reached the goal, there may be an ongoing regimen of supplements that will keep the balance.
