The Truth About Saturated Fats
Should you avoid all saturated fats?
In an article published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Authors J. Bruce German and Cora J. Dillard reviewed 30 years of research on how dietary recommendations to reduce or eliminate saturated fats and replace them with carbohydrates have affected people's health.
They found that this dietary advice creates unexpectedly bad consequences. In fact, research done since the original 1980 recommendation shows that such a change in diet actually creates a dangerous lipid profile and supports high cholesterol!
The early recommendations were to reduce dietary fat so that they provided only 20% of daily energy requirements. Experimental evidence since then has failed to find any reduction in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease from such a low fat intake.
Where Do We Go From Here?
Much of the latest research aims to identify how foods affect individuals based on their genetic phenotype. In other words, what their ancestors ate in their native environments. Personally I'll be interested in what they find from this research. However it will be some time before we know the results.
In the meanwhile, if you want to have a clear idea of what your ideal diet should look like, consider Metabolic Typing. Metabolic Typing is based on over 80 years of research about how the quality and type of foods affect individual health.
