Vitamin C and Stress

Psychology Today reported on a study showing that sufficient levels of vitamin C protect you from both the short- and long-term effects of stress.

Researchers found that enough vitamin C prevents or diminishes negative mental and physical stress symptoms. They also found that it helps people bounce back from stressful situations faster than those who have low blood levels of vitamin C.

For many years, scientists such as Linus Pauling have recommended a much larger dose of this important vitamin than the official RDA of 60 mg. Many researchers now believe that at least 1,000 mg per day is more effective.

One caution: if you haven't been taking vitamin C all along, don't just start with 1,000 mg. Too much vitamin C all at once can create loose stools. You're better off starting with a smaller daily dose in divided amounts. In other words, start with 100 mg twice daily. If you do fine with that after a few days you can slowly increase the amount.
